Heritage

Seaside villas, chalets, manor houses, former coaching inns: the Basque coast and its hinterland have a remarkable built heritage, often protected. B+L Architects transforms it for new uses and new standards of comfort, while keeping what gives it value.

A large Biarritz chalet of six flats, in a protected heritage area, has undergone a complete energy renovation under the French MaPrimeRénov’ Copropriété scheme. Works were carried out with residents in place; under the roof, an apartment hangs from the original timber structure, kept and left exposed.

In Mauléon-Licharre, the former Hostellerie du Château, a coaching inn dating from 1806, becomes 28 social homes: the protected heritage façade and as much of the existing buildings as possible are kept, the masonry is restored with lime and hemp, and the roof timber is reused on site.

Survey of the existing building, dialogue with the heritage architect (Architecte des Bâtiments de France), materials compatible with old buildings (lime, timber, hemp): we guide owners, co-ownerships and public bodies from study to completion, in French or English.
