Converting a hotel into 28 social housing units

Converting the former Hostellerie du Château into 28 social housing units.

The project fits 28 homes within the walls of the former Hostellerie du Château, an abandoned building made up of successive extensions added behind a protected historic façade. Beyond preserving this façade, the project retains as much of the existing buildings as possible, rather than demolishing the whole inner block as the brief intended. This choice allows for greater density. A former coaching inn dating from 1806, the Hostellerie welcomed travellers from 1979 to 2014. The traditional masonry is restored using lime and hemp. Materials from the deconstruction are reused on site, particularly the roof timbers; the rear building, converted into terraced houses, is insulated externally with timber and straw.
