Renovation and extension of Arthez-de-Béarn secondary school
Renovating and extending a school perched on a former defensive ridge.
The school is renovated and extended with five goals: significantly improving its energy performance (insulation, energy generation, solar shading); making the entire site accessible, set on a 22% slope; increasing its capacity with a science hub, an art room and administration; reworking the outdoor spaces with a new entrance, a covered playground and a schoolyard; and using bio-based materials, with a timber-and-straw extension and earth plasters. The extension wraps around the existing building along the slope, resolving both the gradient and circulation in a single move.
