A house in timber & poured earth.
A couple who run a guesthouse wanted a home to share with the many visitors they welcome throughout the year. The plot, on a north-facing slope, overlooks a forest and its stream. The house slips into it half-buried: set against the slope on the uphill side, it opens wide, downhill, onto the treetops.
Life revolves around a large living room extended by a shared terrace, set above the forest. Inside and outside answer each other: you move from one to the other on the same level, and the landscape is present at every moment of the day, from shared breakfasts to evenings on the terrace. Around it, the owners’ suite and the guest rooms each keep their privacy; small volumes can be added over time, like cabins in the garden.
The house is designed with a timber frame and poured-earth walls: materials that keep the rooms cool in summer and warm in winter.
